Day 5 - Cheatday

27/6/2015

Hi all,

as some of you already know I took half a day of from biking and made my way from Güstrow to the ferry in Rostock by train.

Apparently the bus taking you from the train to the ferry is out of sync with sailing times of the ferry that I had to take a taxi from the train station.

2 hours later I arrived in Gedser and rode towards Nykøbing F which is about 28km by bike.

The weather and ride was super smooth as there are very few hills in Denmark and the entire way was paved.

In Nykøbing F i stayed at Falster Bed &  Breakfast hosts were Bjarne and Jeannie the sweetest couple you can imagine. If you ever need a place in Nykøbing F try them first.

3 ladies, the mud and me

Leaving Waren an der Müritz after having spent the night at Pension zur Sonne i was met with a really nice stretch of way.  Excellent paving and very few hills.

A few kilometres in the farmlands turns to forest, which your route will lead you through.

The road through the forest is basically gravel mixed with sand and this was the first time I was really happy for my racing Ralph tires. I was still constantly worried that something would pierce my tires as some of the gravel looked rather sharp.

After going over gravel for a good while I had to cross a road and went right into more forest on the other side.  Here the real nightmare began as the gravel-road ended and was replaced by muddy tracks... It felt like someone was holding me back, while I tried to make progress.
The gravel and mud really drained my energy.
At the end of the mud road I was greeted by 3 ladies who actually "la olaed" me and congratulated me on that I made it.  We talked a few moments about how nightmarish that piece was and then I was already  on my way again towards krakow am see.

The last bit of forest was paved smoothly and the ride really began to be a lot of fun.

Just before arriving in krakow am See thing turned a bit sour as I was met by really strong headwinds and hills.

In the guide i am using this is leg 4, but I really wanted to do more than 40km on one day and took a long break in krakow, where I met a really nice couple from Tirol.

After saying our goodbyes I went on my way again towards Güstrow. This is where I got lost and took the wrong route.
After realising I turned around and backtracked my way to the starting point. By that time I rode 17 km just to end up where I started. How frustrating.

The rest of the way took me through small patches of forest and farmland. Once again I was greeted  by many many hills and very few straight patches to recover, but I finally made it to Güstrow where I found a really nice hotel for the night.

drinks from the trash - wrap up day 3

So I spent the second night in borchards radlhus in Wesenberg, which was quiet comfortable.

The morning started with a bit of an odd moment for myself.  When I got to my table for breakfast there were two cups a small one and a rather large one. Being me I picked the large one and filled it with coffee topped with cold milk. While having a large zip I realised that it was indeed no cup i was drinking from but the table trash container. Can you imagine the waiters horrified looks when our gazes locked...

After packing my last gear I headed towards Waren an der Müritz. About 8 kilometres in it started to rain heavily so that I was completely wet before I managed to get my rainponcho on.

Luckily there was small Hut where I could change for dry clothes and get the poncho sorted.

I worked myself towards Ankershagen through a nice forrestlandscape.

The town Ankershagen itself is famous for Heinrich Schlieman who led some famous excavations. If I am correct, then the town also lies on an ancient salt route spanning from the Mediterranean to the North Sea.

After Ankershagen you will ride through a stretch with a lot of farmland and tiny villages where there is always something to see.

This leg was really hard on me as it was raining for a solid 4 hours of my ride paired with strong headwinds and hills... Hills all the way until I reached Waren.

the Icing, the beast and the hills - Leg 2

24/6/2015

Day 2 started with a hearty breakfast at Havelschloss and the next thing I know is that I am on the way towards Fürstenberg an der Havel.

The first part of the trip takes you towards Ziegelei Mildenberg, an old brick-plant, which was turned into a museum.
On your way there you are surrounded by lakes and forests left and right.  The lakes are flanked by reed and huge patterns of water lillies. That stretch is not very long, but currently is the Icing on the cake.

Just before I reached Mildenberg I was stung by something on my right collarbone, which hurt quiet extensively for a while. Fortunately the pain subsided after roughly 30 minutes.

What followed was a rather longish stretch on the road with headwind.
My knees started to hurt really bad until my first long break, after that the pain was OK to bear.

Then the real pain began as the rolling hills started.  From there on to my final destination Wesenberg the landscape consisted of hills, which really sapps your energy.

Quick napkin math: me together with the bike and equipment weigh in at around 145kg...

Let's hope the terrain will be more forgiving today as the weather is not.

The first day of the trip took me all the way from Berlin to zehdenick without a single drop of rain. The second best part of the trip just starts outside Oranienburg, where you drive in the woods, but the havel is always within sight. The best part of the ride starts roughly 12 km before I reached the final destination Havelschloss in Zehdenick, where you ride next to the Finow-canal and are flanked by trees from the left.

The Havelschloss hotel is run by Dutch people and you get the warmest and friendliest welcome there.  The terrace and garden leading right to the water absolutely breathtaking.

I removed the spare tube and pump from my backpack which makes it a lot easier to interact with my inventory.

In regards to my saddle bags I sometimes bump into them with my heels which get quiet annoying even though I clipped them to my saddle furthest away from my seat.

Also my smashing spandex shorts have no pockets, nor did I bring a bag which I can attach infront of myself... Guess i have to buy a fanny pack, haha - fml

1 day to go

hi ladies and gents,  i am going to ride my bike from berlin to copenhagen.
the ride is roughly 700km and will pass through brandenburg and mecklenburg towards rostock. from there i take the ferry to sealand. The final destination is copenhagen, where i hope to meet a few of my friends, have lost some kilos and am in an overall better shape.
My friend Christian Milbo over from https://outsite.org asked me to tell you a little about the equipment i am bringing with me.

The bike is nothing really to write home about. it is a Bulls SLX with a Shimano Deore FC-M590 crankset and 26" racing ralph (Schwalbe) tires.

The bike panniers are from a german company called ortlieb. they have a really excellent mounting system and are of course waterproof.

The backpack is a haglöfs ardent 5, which i think i love more than i should. i have removed the water reservoir and stuffed it with a swiss army knife, a spare tube, tire levers, a SKS rookie xl pump,  an anker accu pack 13000mA, 3 multipower protein bars (50% protein, mixed flavours), 1,5l waterbottle, sunblocker, a warterproof first aid pack from vaude and some tissues in case i have to cry because i am to weak.

my phone is a Nexus 5 from LG.

I will log the ride via the runtastic roadbike app, which should be available via my facebook-page.
